General Information

Alabama is located on southern coast of the United States, with its state capitol located in Montgomery. The state is divided into 67 counties, and the state's largest city is Birmingham, located in Jefferson county. Birmingham serves as the primary nucleus for the sprawling Greater Birmingham, a region made up of 8 counties and over 1.1 million residents, making it the nation's 48th largest metropolitan area and the largest metropolitan region in Alabama.

Among the 50 states Alabama ranks 30th in size, covering 52,423 square miles. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Alabama is the 23rd most populous state, with 4, 447,100 residents, and the state's population is projected to increase to 4.8 million by 2010 (from the Alabama Dept. of Industrial Relations.

  • Alabama Health Libraries Association - ALHeLA is a professional organization made up of health science librarians from the state of Alabama.
  • Alabama Library Association - The Alabama Library Association (ALLA) is a non-profit corporation formed to encourage and promote the welfare of libraries and professional interests of librarians in the State of Alabama.
  • Network of Alabama Academic Libraries - A consortium of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and Alabama's eligible public and private four-year colleges and universities whose purpose is to coordinate academic library resource sharing and to enhance education and research.
  • Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association - SC/MLA is a professional organization made up of health science librarians from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
