General Information
Alabama is located on southern coast of the United States, with its state capitol located in Montgomery. The state is divided into 67 counties, and the state's largest city is Birmingham, located in Jefferson county. Birmingham serves as the primary nucleus for the sprawling Greater Birmingham, a region made up of 8 counties and over 1.1 million residents, making it the nation's 48th largest metropolitan area and the largest metropolitan region in Alabama.
Among the 50 states Alabama ranks 30th in size, covering 52,423 square miles. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Alabama is the 23rd most populous state, with 4, 447,100 residents, and the state's population is projected to increase to 4.8 million by 2010 (from the Alabama Dept. of Industrial Relations.
