North Carolina is located in the southeast United States, with its state capital located in Raleigh. North Carolina has 100 counties and is bordered by Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. Among the 50 states, North Carolina ranks 28th in size, covering 53,821 square miles. According to the 2000 Census, North Carolina ranks 11th in population size with 8,049,313 residents, and the state's population is projected to increase by 17.3 percent through 2010.

Several counties are projected to experience growth rates of 25 percent or more through 2010, including Brunswick, Cabarrus, Currituck, Dare, Franklin, Harnett, Hoke, Iredell, Johnston, Mecklenburg, Pender, Union and Wake counties. The three largest municipalities by population are Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro, totaling over 1.3 million residents.

• AHEC Digital Library - The North Carolina AHEC Digital Library (ADL) is an online service of the North Carolina AHEC Program serving North Carolina healthcare professionals with a focus on clinical care and continuing education. Membership is required to access the databases. Membership information is available from your local AHEC Library or from the ADL Membership page.
• NC Health Info - NC Health Info is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
